Tell us about your first concert experience:
My first concert experience was Garth Brooks with my mom when I was about 5 years old. "Friends in Low Places" was my favorite song at the time and I was my mom's date. Needless to say, I think I bought the drinks that night and I was pretty drunk on life and cherry slurpees.
If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
Teaching young kids has always been something that I have wanted to do. I guess in some form I would still want to be inspiring people or to be in a spot where I could help people believe and see the light in themselves.
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I know I say this all of the time... but definitely Justin Timberlake. I have a feeling that his spin on this band and rock music, in general, would be absolutely insane.
If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
I would probably pass equal rights laws that allow same sex couples to get married and to have the same rights. We're all just people. We all deserve the same rights. This is 2011. Then I would make a law that requires people to chew with their mouths closed.
What social cause is closest to your heart?
Health care. People deserve, at the very least, to be healthy and to have a shot at a long life.
What does the right to vote mean to you?
The right to vote is everything. It's what makes this country so incredible. We have the right to choose who is going to lead us and what we want to see happen around us.
What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
There are so many bands that have influenced me. In high school I listened to music constantly. Some of my favorites were Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Incubus, AFI, My Chemical Romance, Queen... Just to name a few.
What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
I was a huge basketball player. People think because I sang in the band that I was a band kid... When in reality, I was much more of an athlete. To this day, basketball is one of my favorite things to do.
What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
In high school everyone is figuring out who they want to be. At the time, I didn't know whatI wanted to do with my life. There were so many great options. Sports, the band, college etc... Trying to stay true to yourself, following your heart, and making the smartest decisions is a lot harder than it looks.
Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
I do... but I would definitely like to do more. I'd love to volunteer at local schools or the local YMCA to help kids and to be a positive influence and role model in their lives. It's super important to give back when you have the chance to.
What change would you like to see in our society in the next year?
There are so many. I just want the parties to get along. We are in such an economic crisis and in order to get out the parties are going to have to come together and compromise.
