Sick of Sarah
Answered by Jessica Forsythe
Tell us about your first concert experience:
My mom surprised my best friend and me with Boys II Men tickets when I was 12 or 13. I don't remember too much about that night and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. My mom tells me I was very excited!
If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
I could see myself working or being involved with helping people overcoming drug and alcohol addictions. I was once in a position where I needed help and there were people there for me. I want to be that person for others.
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to work with Eminem. He's not afraid to voice his opinions with meaningful lyrics, powerful messages and the ability to reach many people.
If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
I would focus on providing financial resources to communities across the country to provide educational prevention programs and services for youth on anti bullying, character education and alcohol and drug prevention.
What social cause is closest to your heart?
Of all the social causes out there, the one that's closest to my heart is drug and alcohol treatment and prevention for youth. Like I mentioned before, addiction is something that I've struggled with personally and I know of many other musicians that have as well.
What does the right to vote mean to you?
Being able to voice your opinion and having the freedom to stand up and speak out for what you believe is right. We shouldn’t take this right for granted. People deserve to have a voice in the society they live in.
What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
I listened to lots of alternative rock and hip hop with bands like Weezer, Cake, Sublime, Aerosmith, Jay-Z, Snoop, Dr. Dre. My style was more my own and wasn't influenced by any one band or person.
What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
Well the only real extra curricular activity I was in was band. Surprised? I started off playing the flute in 5th grade. After a trial period of a few weeks I came home one day and said "Mom, I think I'm a drummer."
What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
Actually my high school years were very tumultuous. It was an accomplishment for me to just make it through graduation.
Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
Yes. I've volunteered for my old job, Rock In Prevention and have done volunteer work in various hospitals and treatment centers.
What change would you like to see in our society in the next year?
I would expand the awareness to the youth of our society and educate them of the harmful consequences involving drug and alcohol abuse. For example, Rock In Prevention is a program that uses music and the arts in a persuasive way to reach the hearts and minds of kids to help them make positive and healthy life choices. Rock teaches drug awareness, character education and anti-bullying programs.
