Rock Island, IL, native Lissie will release her debut full-length album, Catching A Tiger, in the U.S. on August 17th via Fat Possum Records. The album, which ranges from classic, early ‘60s-flavored pop to stirring, spirited folk to brilliant, unfettered pop/rock is rooted in her remarkable, soulful and powerful voice. Catching A Tiger was released in the UK in late June and has already been garnering Lissie high praise: BBC Music declared it “…a debut that dreams beyond typical new artist parameters…she sounds like one of the greatest female vocalists of a generation, arguably without even really trying.” The album also follows her acclaimed Why You Runnin’ EP from last fall, which was praised by Paste, Nylon, Marie Claire, Filter, and The Boston Globe, among others.
Tell us about your first concert experience:
My dad went to college with a guy that was tour managing Neil Diamond, so we got to see him play in Moline, Illinois when I was about 11. I didn't know much about Neil at that age so I think I was bored, haha, but liked some of the songs! Afterwards we got a tour of the backstage and I got a guitar pick… I thought that was pretty cool!
If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Hmmm… can't pick one.. danger mouse, damon albarn, or trey anastasio
If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
As president I couldn't do anything without everyone else in the house and senate's approval… so that's a tough question to answer. I'm concerned with conserving natural spaces and resources, the energy crisis, farming, unemployment, etc.. not sure where I'd start!!!
What social cause is closest to your heart?
Family planning and woman's reproductive health and rights.
What does the right to vote mean to you?
That I have a say in the kind of world I want to live in and the kind of world I'd like future generations to inherit.
What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
It's all over the place really. In high school it was Fiona Apple, Dr. Dre, Phish, Garth Brooks… I don't think that the music I make is influenced by music really or other artists... it comes from my experiences and some subconscious place.
What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
I was a cheerleader and in the crimestoppers. I was on the class ring designing committee and on high school senate. I basically joined every club I could cause I wanted my picture in the year book a lot! haha! but also, I liked to come up with ideas and be involved! I was outspoken so I liked to join the conversation on a range of topics!
What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
Yikes.. there were a lot of obstacles! I felt stifled and a bit different, so in finding my voice, I ended up drawing too much attention to myself and there were teachers/ administrators that I swear had it out for me! I had a rough time in high school and it would take me pages and pages to explain it all. the bottom line is that it's hard for anyone to be an individual in a public school sometimes and thank goodness I had a supportive family or who knows where'd I be!
Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
Generally and unfortunately, no. lately it's because I'm never in one place for more than a day or two. in the past , I've sang for hospitalized children.. it seemed to lift their spirits and get them grooving a bit. I volunteered at a grade school, where I just helped out in the cafeteria and at recess. In college, I collected everyone's recycling in my 12 story dormitory once a week. But these days.. its few and far between. Answering this question compels me to make time to volunteer from here on out though!
