Austin Austin Brown

Tell us about your first concert experience:
My first concert experience was seeing my mother [Rebbie Jackson] perform live. Just seeing her in that way freaked me out. As a kid, the entire concert environment was scary, but it also lit something up inside of me. It felt powerful--powerful enough to tell me that this is what I had to do. I had to become a performer.

If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
I couldn't tell you at the moment -- I could never and don't ever want to imagine doing anything else.

If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could collaborate with one artist, it would be Marvin Gaye during his "What's Going On" period. He was able to capture the pain the whole world was feeling in one record. I would love to just see him his process of creating and understand how he was able to emotionally connect so deeply that he was able to convey a message to the entire globe.

If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
If I became President, the first action I would take is help fix our health care system. Many people suffer due to limitations created by a poor health care system. Regardless of class, financial status, etc. American citizens should have the ability to seek proper health care and not have to settle for second rate treatment that is dictated by their ability or inability to pay. All citizens deserve the comforts of leading healthy, comfortable lives from birth to death.

What social cause is closest to your heart?
The social issue closest to my heart is national legalization of gay marriage. Love does not discriminate, therefore, we should not have the ability to discriminate one of the deepest expressions of love.

What does the right to vote mean to you?
The right to vote is the ability and opportunity to make change. It's the opportunity to unite beliefs with like-minded people and make the steps and choices to change the world. A vote is forcing your country to hear your voice and take the necessary actions to make your decision matter.

What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
The bands and artist I listened to most in high school ranged A Tribe Called Quest to the Chili Peppers to Earth Wind and Fire. It's hard for me to pinpoint one or two specific artists that influence my style.

What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
In high school, I was part of the photography team and we'd develop our own pictures.

What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
My biggest obstacle in high school was interacting with new people. Since I changed schools in high school, I was a bit of a loner and an introvert. It forced me to be more outgoing, just so I could have somebody to talk to.

Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
I just recently teamed up with KIIS FM and Rockstar Health and Fitness and performed a free show for middle school kids to support their afterschool and health and fitness programs.

What change would you like to see in our society in the next year?
I want to see a societal change in which people are focused on awareness of worldwide social injustices and the abuse of human rights, instead of being so wrapped up in "hot" pop culture topics that have little effect on improving the real problems we have in the world.
