Army Navy spent 2007 holed up in Fireproof Studio West. with Producer Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo, Gigilo Aunts) and have just finished their first full length LP. Having sharpened their studio chops in the past with Steve McDonald (Redd Kross, Beck, Be Your Own Pet) and David Boucher (Phantom Planet, The Ditty Bops) the band have been able to finally take the time time to record their dream record.
Blending British pop melodicism with the grit of the Pacific Northwest, Army Navy recalls the sound of great acts like The Posies and Teenage Fanclub crossed with emotional touches of the The Smiths. Former Pinwheel co-frontman Justin Kennedy has moved on from sharing vocal duties with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie, Postal Service) to showcase his own pop sensibilities. With its lush harmonies and blankets of guitar fuzz, Army Navy has created something truly unique: a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation.
Known for an explosive live show, Army Navy performs regularly with artists as varied as Teenage Fanclub, Wolfmother, The Tyde, The Youth Group, Spinto Band, The Like, and Arctic Monkeys. If you missed the band at their Spaceland Residency, Fader Party at CMJ 2005 or SXSW 2006 or the songs on NBCs Num3ers, Showtimes Weeds, The WBs The Mountain, or Fox's pop-culture barometer 'The O.C.', you can still catch Army Navy on tastemaker radio stations across the country. Army Navy was a featured live act on John in the Morning's show on KEXP in Seattle, and have been been added to rotation on KEXP (Seattle), WOXY (Cincinatti), Indie 103 (LA), Q101 (Chicago), and XMs Ethel, to name a few.
"Theres sunshine in those guitars but their melancholia can only stem from souls rooted in a country where tinned meat is considered family food." -NME
"Songs you need to Download now! --2 - Army Navy "Saints" A splashy jangle of distorted guitars and winsomely defiant vocals- like Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque all jacked up on Mountain Dew - that's the feelgood non-hit of the winter" -- Spin
"Catch a whiff of Army Navy's sweet jangle." -Pitchfork
"Army Navy follow in a direct line from The Zombies to Teenage Fanclub, with brief detours for The Posies, Redd Kross, My Bloody Valentine, Blur and the like, layering heavy, distorted guitars, pounding rhythms and oh-so-sad and sweet vocal melancholy into rock and roll bliss." -Othermusic
"Seriously, I could listen to songs like this from now until the end of time." -Idolator
"Army Navy's music carries with it a twee earnestness that floats like a butterfly and stings like a first kiss. Former NW resident/Pinwheel co-frontman Justin Kennedy has moved on from his days sharing vocal duties with Ben Gibbard in that band, and the Los Angles sunshine warms the dreamy days traversed on Army Navy's record." -Seattle Stranger
