Tell us about your first concert experience:
When i was 8 years old, I saw Mark Lowry – a Christian comedian/singer. He was like the Weird Al of Christian music. I remember his ability to command the audience… to keep them captivated.
If you couldn't be a musician, what would you be doing instead?
I like animals a lot… so I would probably work with animals in some capacity.
If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Benny Sings. He's the best at capturing happiness in music that's so difficult to capture as a songwriter.
If you became President, what is the first action you would take?
I would find someone else to be President. I haven't the slightest clue of what it takes to be the leader of this country and any concepts I do have are based on a very limited perspective of a mere 24 years. But all that said, free tennis shoes for everyone!
What social cause is closest to your heart?
Health care. My mother went through a battle with breast cancer recently. She had to continue working 40 hours per week just to keep up with the costs of her treatment to fight this illness. Thankfully she's in full remission now… but I know there are many others who aren't as fortunate and everyone should have access to health care. Seems like the most basic human right.
What does the right to vote mean to you?
The right to vote is such a beautiful thing. Sadly, I feel that our current political and voting system doesn't always benefit the mass population and often times those votes get overshadowed by the agendas of the minority who paid for their campaign. But I strongly feel that the more people who vote, the more affect we can all have.
What bands or artists did you listen to when you were in high school? And which bands or artists influenced your style the most?
When I was in high school I listened to Cake, Robin Thicke (when he was just “Thicke”), Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gay. I think they all influenced me a ton. That was such an influential time.
What activity or group were you involved with in high school that might surprise people today?
National Honor Society. Haha. I was also 4-year varsity basketball which seems to surprise people.
What's the biggest obstacle that you had to overcome in high school? (could be personal or academic)
The biggest obstacle in high school was definitely enjoying myself more instead of getting caught up in all the insecurities of adolescence.
Do you do any volunteer or community work when you're not on tour?
In the past I've done volunteer work at soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Lately though I've been touring pretty non-stop over the last few years. Community involvement and volunteering are both very important things to me though.
What change would you like to see in our society in the next year?
I would like to see more investment in education, less emphasis on fame/notoriety, and a much bigger emphasis on family. Also, I'd really like to see equal rights in regards to marriage. I think if gay marriage isn't an acknowledged union between people, then divorce should be much more difficult to accomplish, or make the process of marriage for straight people more difficult.
