Registration Information
The deadline to register to vote in Illinois is 28 days before the election. Be sure your form is postmarked 28 days before the election.
Note: You can also register in-person with your local election officials during “grace period” registration. For the primary, the grace period is January 30th through February 23rd. For the general, the grace period is March 13th through April 6th.
To qualify to vote in Illinois, you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be at least 18 years of age by Election Day
- Have been a resident of the precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day

In-person early voting is available beginning March 25th and ending April 6th. Click here to find early voting locations.
Any registered voter may also vote by absentee ballot through mail or in-person. The first day to file an application for absentee ballot with your local election authority is February 28th. All requests by mail must be received to your local election authority by April 4th. Also, all in-person absentee ballot requests must be made by April 8th. For more information, please click here.
Note: During early voting, voters must provide a current and valid government-issued photo ID, such as a current Illinois driver's license, current state identification card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State or another government-issued identification document containing the applicant's photograph.

What do you need to bring?
Generally no identification is required to vote at the polls. If you've voted in a federal election in Illinois before, you aren’t required to bring ID in order to check and obtain a ballot.
If you registered to vote by mail and did not provide the required identification with the mail-in registration application, then you will need to provide an ID with your current name and signature.
The following forms of identification are acceptable:
- A valid and current Illinois driver's license
- A valid and current state ID issued by the Illinois Secretary of State
- A current utility bill with name and address
- A current bank statement with name and address
- A recent government check with name and address
- A recent paycheck with name and address
- Another government document that shows the name and address
