Rock the Vote Calls On Young Voters to "Pledge to Pick the Prez"
"The power of our vote is extraordinary. Young voters are in a position to shape the political landscape for decades to come."
Washington, DC - January 30, 2008
There is a historical movement underway, and today, Rock the Vote launched "Pledge to Pick the Prez," mobilizing young adults to speak out about the issues they care about and turn out to the polls to cast their votes on Super Tuesday and in November.
As evident with the surge in youth turnout in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, and most recently tripling youth voter turnout in Florida, "Pledge to Pick the Prez" calls on young voters to keep that momentum going in the 22 states that will hold their primaries on Tuesday. Through online and grassroots outreach, we will ask young people to tell us the issues they care about and ask them to pledge to vote on Super Tuesday by signing the pledge form on Rock the Vote's website (www.rockthevote.com). As part of our mobile efforts, we're teaming up with AT&T to send get-out-the-vote text message reminders on the day of the primaries. Additionally, we will offer an online toolkit for organizing debate-watching parties.
"The power of our vote is extraordinary. Young voters are in a position to shape the political landscape for decades to come. 'Pledge to Pick the Prez' builds on the momentum we have seen in the primaries thus far and encourages young adults to once again make a statement on Super Tuesday," said Heather Smith, executive director, Rock the Vote.
Today's young adults are civically engaged and paying close attention to politics and since 2004 have been voting in growing numbers. This year, Rock the Vote has set an aggressive goal to register two million young people, and to turnout nearly half of all young voters to the polls in November. Through our online voter registration tool, mobile marketing, a series of youth forums, get-out-the-vote events, and media partnerships, we will reach out to build on young adults energy and activism by empowering them to make their voices heard.
