NYS Board of Elections Emails
You may have seen the article today accusing Rock the Vote of giving you the wrong address to mail your voter registration form. This is not true--Don't let this sloppy journalism scare you.
Rock the Vote’s online registration form, when printed, gives you the address for the New York State Board of Elections to mail your registration to.
According to the United States Election Assistance Commission, this is the correct address. But we wanted to double-confirm, so we also checked with the NYS Board of Elections. Twice, in writing, the Board of Elections confirmed this is the correct address to send registration applications. Check out the emails below.
Item 1. December 2007 confirmation from the New York State Board of Elections.
Subject: Re: Voter registration language for New York - Rock the Vote

Under section 5-210 paragraph 3 of the Election Law we are required to accept your federal NVRA forms. The NY language looks fine on this end and we look forward to receipt of your registration forms. Thanks.

Attached is the New York language we're using for the mail re-registration campaign, which will be used with the included NVRA form. Please let me know if the language is correct for New York, and if you have any recommended changes we would be glad to revise the instructions.
Item 2. July 2008 Confirmation that the address is correct and national registration form is accepted.

Thank you so much for taking the time today to go over New York's voter registration requirements.
I just want to re-confirm that you accept the National Voter Registration Act application and that you accept this application on 8.5x11 standard weight paper. And that there are no other standards, regulations or practices that we need to follow to ensure that these applications are accepted.
The applications will be sent to:
NYS Board of Elections
40 Steuben St.
Albany, NY 12207 (if you're able to find out the correct +4, that would be great)
I have attached the New York state-specific NVRA voter registration instructions here for your review. We will also be including the following text to ensure voters are completely aware of the mail-in NY voter registration deadline and to avoid any confusion if people have already registered or re-registered:
Registration Deadline for Mail-In Applications - October 10, 2008: To be eligible to vote in New York in the November 4th general election, your application must be postmarked by October 10.
Already Registered in New York?
If you are already registered to vote at your current address, there is no need to submit this application.
If you are not sure if you are registered to vote, you can check by visiting https://voterlookup.elections.state.ny.us/votersearch.aspx, or by contacting your county board of elections.
As we discussed on the phone, we will pre-populate the registration application (name+address). We can also county code each applicant's return address for easier sorting, if that will be helpful to you. Again, you should expect to see the forms coming in around mid-September.
If you could please confirm the above at your earliest convenience and flag any concerns it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help!
